Funding for International Students

As an international graduate student, scholarship, funding, and award opportunities are extremely limited. Many of the awards listed here are for domestic and international students, both. I

Please note: If a student receives awards of a slightly higher value, then York University scales back its own funding based on the award value. Receiving some awards also restricts students from teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and graduate assistantships, and/or may restrict students from applying for other awards.

Here are some of the things international students are eligible for:

EXTERNAL AWARDS

1. The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)

OGS awards are merit–based scholarships available to MA and PhD students in all disciplines of academic study. It is valued at $15,000 per year for a one year maximum. To be eligible, you must be enrolled full-time in an Ontario institution, in the first 3 years of your graduate study. The deadline for PhD students is usually in October, and for MA students is usually in December.

2. Trudeau Doctoral Scholarship

Trudeau Scholars are selected each year nationally to support outstanding doctoral candidates pursuing research in social sciences and humanities, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: (1) human rights and dignity; (2) responsible citizenship; (3) Canada in the world; and (4) people and their natural environment. It is valued at $40,000 per year up to three years plus a travel allowance. Applicants must be nominated by their graduate program director or another faculty member. The York internal deadline is usually in December. Please write to your GPD about being nominated if you're interested in applying!

3. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS)

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies. It is valued at $50,000 per year, up to three years. Applicants must be nominated by their graduate program director. PhD students about to begin graduate school, or at the end of their 1st year of graduate studies are eligible to apply. The York internal deadline is usually in July. Please write to your GPD about being nominated if you're interested in applying!

4. Study in Canada Scholarships

The Study in Canada Scholarships program offers academic scholarships for up to two years of study at the post-secondary level that leads to a diploma, post-secondary or post-graduate certificate, or Master’s degree at a college, technical or vocational school, or university in Canada. The scholarship value varies depending on the duration, level and program of study. You may receive up to $60,000 for one academic year of minimum 8 months and maximum 12 months in duration or up to $120,000 for two academic years of maximum 24 months in duration. Candidates must be from Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Comoros, Djibouti, Fiji, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritania, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Vanuatu. Palestinians from the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem are also eligible. The York internal deadline is often the March of your incoming year.

INTERNAL AWARDS

1. Anne Simone Graduate Student International Conference Award

The Anne Simone Graduate Student International Conference Award will be given annually to one student enrolled full time in a graduate program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies who is attending an international conference to present his/her research. It is valued at $1,000 (Subject to change), and MA and PhD students are eligible to apply. Applications are usually due in February.

2. Armand and Denise La Barge Graduate Scholarship in Multiculturalism

The Armand and Denise La Barge Graduate Scholarship in Multiculturalism is awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled at York University. To be eligible for the Scholarship the recipient must demonstrate academic excellence in their field of study. It is valued at $8000, and MA and PhD students are eligible for the award. Student deadlines are often in February.

3. Barbara Crow Graduate Student Leadership Award

This award is given annually to a graduate student at York University who demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities. It is valued at $1000, and MA and PhD students are eligible for it. The deadline is often in November.

4. Kent Haworth Archival Research Fellowship

This endowed fellowship will enable students to make use of archival holdings at York University in aid of a doctoral dissertation project. This fellowship is available to full-time doctoral students in any discipline who are at the dissertation stage of his/her program and who wish to make use of the holdings of the Archives of York University in aid of his/her research. The award is valued at $1365 and full-time and part-time students are eligible. Applications are usually accepted across the year.

5. Manulife Graduate Scholarships

The Manulife Graduate Scholarships will be awarded to incoming and/or continuing doctoral students researching International Health Policy or Epidemics. It is valued at 2 awards of $10000 each. Deadlines are usually in April.

6. Provost Dissertation Scholarship

The Provost Dissertation Scholarship is awarded to encourage and assist outstanding students in the fifth year of doctoral study to concentrate exclusively on the completion of their dissertations. At the time of application, student must be in fourth year of PhD. There are 4 awards of up to $22,500. Deadlines are usually in March of the 4th year of academic study.

7. Sherrill Cheda Graduate Scholarship

This award is given to incoming students who demonstrate academic excellence, whose research focuses on women, and who demonstrate financial need. Two awards of up to $8000 each are given each year, to MA and PhD students. Deadlines are usually in the April of your incoming year.

8. Susan Mann Dissertation Scholarship

The Susan Mann Dissertation Scholarship is awarded to encourage and assist outstanding students in their final year of doctoral study to concentrate exclusively on and complete their dissertations. Up to 9 awards of $22,500 are awarded, to PhD students who are in their 4th year of study while applying. Student deadlines are usually in March of your 4th year.

9. York University Retirees' Association Graduate Award

The York University Retirees' Association Graduate Award will be awarded to full-time Master's students who demonstrate financial need and either a strong commitment to volunteerism in the community or active engagement in a student leadership role. The YURA award applications are available to eligible students in Faculties on a rotational basis. Full time MA students are eligible to apply for this $1500 award. Deadlines are usually in November.
